Time for another installment of WGOITWOOOTCFBR ('What's going on in the world of one of the chaps from Barricades Rise', isn't it obvious?)
At the weekend I took my wife (she paid) to see The Avengers Assemble on the big screen. I saw it in 3D, but only due to the fact we have a 4 month old, and he loves 3D. No, really we saw it in 3D as there were loads of times available and only 3 times in the useless 3rd world version (2D) and needed to get back in time to make sure our 4 month old had taken care of his grandad ok.
The film started slowly I thought and I was actually really bored after 15 minutes. But then...BAM! Stuff explodes and people fly and look sexy. By the end I would say it was a hoot and a half. It's really funny too as Wheden (Joss, the director and writer, also made Buffy, Angel, Firefly - All top draw) has his stamp all over it. There will be a sequal. I'd give it a Twister on the lollypop scale (8/10)
I've just finished Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. The way it's written is baffling to start but once it's clear what's going on, it is so touching. It's written from the point of 2 people; Jonathan himself, writing a story of his relatives and where he came from in Ukraine in the 1700's, then another charactor called Alex, who is Jonathan's Ukranian translator. Alex writes in 2 ways, one as a letter direct to Jonathan, and another as what happens when Jonathan came to visit Ukraine. It sounds pretty hefty stuff but it's so light and funny and it's the first book I laughed out loud to for a very long time. Towards the end it gets very dry and serious but I loved it all the way through. Plus there is a dog called Sammy Davies Jnr, Jnr. Brilliant read. 9/10. I started to read the bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey after but it was damn awful, I read about a third of it and gave up, so now I'm on my first Lee Child book. I don't know what it's called. They're all the same anyway right?
The West Wing is my favourite show ever on TV. I've seen the first 3 seasons and never got round to watching the rest so I was over the moon when my wife bought me the whole set for my birthday! We started watching it from the start last night and I'm still loving it from episode 1. To tell you what it's about, to write it down, it sounds so dull and boring, but to see it; the writing is the best and it's so fast. 10/10
On the band front we're hooking up tomorrow to get on down to the music. We really need to step it up as we have our first gig in under 4 weeks. No doubt we'll blog about it on Friday.
